Protecting your plants from winter helps ensure their survivability. Even though plants and grass are dormant in the winter heavy snow fall can cause severe damage to your lawn and your favorite plants. Here are a few tips to keep your lawn and trees and shrubs winterized before the harsh winter months.

Reduce mowing height from 2-3 inches during the growing season to 1 1/2 inches for your final mowing. This removes older parts of the grass blades made up of frost sensitive cells.

Avoid walking on snow covered turf. This compacts the snow and insulates the lawn leaving it cold as the soil begins it's natural warming. This can cause the turf to develop a fungus disease called snow mold.

Young deciduous shrubs (those that loose their leaves) should be tied up using twine. Loop the twine around the base of the plant. Pull the branches together while winding twine around the plant working your way to the top.

Young ornamental trees (such as crabapple) should be protected from damage caused by rodents by wrapping the tree trunk with a tree wrap, a paper or plastic material wrapped around the base of the tree to the point where the branches begin.
