Emerald Ash Borer

Ash trees are an extremely popular landscape tree used because of it’s tolerance to harsh Ohio weather conditions. In the last couple of years Ohio has been listed as one of the most severe areas affected by the Emerald Ash Borer. The adult Emerald Ash Borer beetle is dark metallic green in color and measures about 1/2 inch-long and 1/8 inch wide. Their larvae can be found in trees or branches measuring about 1 inch in diameter.

In affected Ash trees the canopy begins to thin above portions of the trunk and major branches because the borer destroys the water and nutrient supply under the bark. Heavily infested trees start to show signs of the canopy dying back, usually starting at the top of the tree. One third to one half of the branches can die in one year. Most of the canopy will be dead within 2 years of when symptoms first start showing. Sometimes ash trees push out sprouts from the trunk after the upper portions of the tree dies. Although difficult to see, the adult beetles leave a distinct "D"-shaped exit hole in the bark, about 1/8 inch in diameter, when they emerge in June.
