Summer Seeding

Considering Seeding Your Lawn This Summer? Here’s What to Know.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about seeding your lawn in the summer. While it can be done, it comes with a long list of to-dos if you want it to succeed. The truth is, fall remains the gold standard for growing new grass, thanks to cooler temps, more predictable moisture, and fewer weed competitors.

But if you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, here’s some summer lawn seeding tips you should know.

Summer Seeding in Ohio: The Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Quick results if done perfectly
  • Great if you’re selling your home soon and need curb appeal fast
  • May help fill in thin spots or pet damaged areas temporarily

Cons:

  • Higher failure rate due to heat and drought
  • Grass seedlings are extremely vulnerable to stress
  • You’ll compete with aggressive summer weeds
  • Requires intense watering and maintenance

Watering Instructions:

New Seed:

  • Keep the soil constantly moist, not soggy.
  • Water lightly 2–4 times per day for 5–10 minutes each time (early morning, midday, early evening).
  • Once germination starts (around day 7–14), switch to once daily for 15–20 minutes.
  • After 3–4 weeks, water every other day but more deeply to promote root growth.

Existing Turf (if overseeding):

  • Water as if you’re babying new seed, because you are.
  • Don’t skip days in hot weather; even one dry day can kill new seedlings.

Mowing Tips:

  • Do not mow until the new seedlings reach at least 3 inches tall.
  • When you do mow, only remove the top third of the blade.
  • Keep your mower blade sharp to avoid tearing tender seedlings.
  • Mow in cooler hours of the day if possible (early morning or evening).

Why Fall Is Worth the Wait

Fall gives you:

  • Ideal temperatures (warm soil + cool air)
  • Less weed pressure
  • Natural rainfall
  • More time for roots to develop before winter

Translation: better germination, better survival, better lawn.
