We love our pets, but sometimes our pets don’t love our lawn. If man’s best friend has been a foe to your grass, not to worry. There are solutions that can get your lawn looking lush again for you and your pet to enjoy.
Dead Grass From Dogs
Dog urine releases nitrogen and salt onto the lawn, which burns the grass and causes brown, dead patches. If this has happened to your lawn, start by raking away as much of the dead grass as possible. Deposit finely ground limestone on top, water the area and then stay away from it for a week. The limestone helps return the grass to the proper pH balance. After a week, lay topsoil on top of the limestone and sprinkle grass seeds on the topsoil. Water the area daily until the grass has reached the length to mow. To prevent the grass from dying, designate a spot of pea gravel in your landscaping for your pet to use as a bathroom area.
Yellow Spots on Lawn
If your grass is yellow, but not yet brown, it indicates the grass is in the early stage of dying. At this point, you can still save the grass if you act quickly. The first line of defense is to rid the soil of excess nitrogen and salt. There are products that cleanse the soil so the grass can start growing healthy again.
Overseeding for Bare Lawns
If your dog spends a lot of time running around your lawn, the grass may become thin and worn down. Overseeding can help restore your lawn to be thick and full. Overseeding is different from reseeding, which is when you plant new grass seeds on bare soil. With overseeding, you spread grass seeds over existing grass to add depth and thickness. To prepare your lawn for overseeding, cut your grass shorter than normal. Don’t forget to bag the clippings. The overseeding process will consist of enhancing the soil and spreading grass seeds. Following this step, you will need to feed and water the area until the new grass reaches the same height as the rest of your lawn.
